FAQ + Intro to the Studio Slowcore Dark Forest

Editor's Note: Today (20 May 2026) DFOS opens its doors to the public — a major milestone. If you're just joining us, welcome! You're now a member of one of the pioneer Dark Forest spaces.
We're rearranging the furniture to accommodate the expansion and make room for Slowcore Press (our incipient publishing/curation entity that's preparing its first release on Metalabel), so you're getting an early view of our Dark Forest HQ. 1) What is slowcore?
From the original Slowcore Manifesto: "... slowcore is an affirmation of a commitment to cultivating patience, holding space for emergence, protecting our time and attention from extractive forces, and respecting the indwelling intelligence of the creative process."
The heart of slowcore is the movement to reclaim human attention from extractive forces (including hustle culture) and re-orient it toward what matters most.
2) Where did the word slowcore come from?
Good word-nerd question!
Slowcore is a derivation of the neologism normcore. It was made up to express distaste for hustle culture and the concept of "earning a living."
Later it morphed into a sort of headless brand and started a social media movement to claim the concept as part of slow culture — a development that inspired us to launch Studio Slowcore.
(N.B.: We've since learned that it's also a genre of music).
3) What is Studio Slowcore?
Studio Slowcore is a creative production studio for deep inquiry into slow culture and artists' livelihoods.
We think of it as a hybrid: both a business endeavor and a gift culture.
4) What kind of creative work do you do?
We write about slow culture — particularly a concept we call slowcore value flow — and how it relates to economic reciprocity for writers and artists. Slowcore Press, our incipient publishing entity, is planning a series of releases on Metalabel.
Our Dark Forest hosts browsing libraries that cater to sustained-attention interests, including the Public Domain Art Portal — a personal curation-by-slowcore-ethos project.
Danica also works with clients as a copy editor, and serves as Creative Director for Black Stone Sanctuary in Oregon — a dark retreat project (with its own separate DFOS) by contemplative animists with a goth nesting instinct.
5) Who's involved?
Co-stewards @Danica Swanson and @Trigs — both word nerds who love to write — handle most of the studio's decision-making. We also work with contributors from Return On Attention, a group chat we co-stewarded in our social media days.
6) How does the Studio Slowcore Dark Forest space work?

What interests you about slowcore?
There's no admission fee to join our Dark Forest, and no "engagement" pressure once you're in. Lurkers are welcome to just hang out and quietly observe at leisure — free from ads, manipulative pop-ups, and other forms of enshittification.
After joining, all members of our Dark Forest can access our gift-feeds free of charge, and connect with us in our hospitality suite (chat). To dig deeper into our hidden treasure troves (browsing libraries), members can purchase keys (access passes) to unlock keyholders-only materials.
Slowcore value includes gift and market value, after all, and we respect both. The decision is up to you, in your own time. Subscription nags are not the slowcore way.
The Public Domain Art Portal (PDAP) Blog is a good place to start for art appreciators. The PDAP features daily selections of public domain art curated by slowcore ethos. Coming soon: a keyholders tier that grants access to additional material, including special themed collections and mood boards.
The Slowcore Value Flow Blog is where the Sloth People (that's us) and our allies get deeper into the weeds about the principles of slowcore value flow, gift culture, and related topics.
